Yarloop was first settled in the mid 1800s and was the centre of Western Australia's timber industry in the early 1900s. A modern mechanical mill has taken the place of the old timber mill. However, the historic engineering workshops that spanned the horsedrawn and steam eras are restored as the Yarloop Workshops Museum and are open to the public. The Yarloop Heritage trail begins at the workshops and a picnic area is provided nearby.
Other attractions in the area include Logue Brook Dam, a few kilometres south of Yarloop. The dam has a caravan park, boat ramp and barbecues and is excellent for swimming, water skiing, and trout fishing in season. A number of bush walks in the area have been signposted. Yarloop Pool is a local swimming and picnic area three kilometres west of town.
