The Wongan Hills district was first discovered in 1836 by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe, but the first settlers didn't arrive until 1905. The first store was opened in 1909 and the town of Wongan Hills was officially gazetted in 1911 when the railway line was opened.

Today, local industries include agriculture, an abattoir, an agricultural research station, pelletised feed manufacturing and agricultural machinery manufacturing. The Agricultural Research Station in the town conducts guided tours for visitors interested in seeing the latest developments in farming techniques.

Of historical interest, the Pioneer Museum has a collection of photographs and memorabilia from the early days including an interesting section on the Cadoux earthquake.

Natural attractions in the district include: Dingo Rock, a fauna reserve 26 kilometres east of Wongan Hills, in late winter and early spring the reserve is covered in a blanket of everlasting flowers; Xmas Rock can be reached with a 2.5 kilometre walk through bushland supporting many birds and flowering bush; Mount O'Brien Lookout provides excellent views of the surrounding countryside including Lake Hinds and Lake Ninan.

Lake Ninan, located 10 kilometres west of the town, is a popular spot for sailing, water skiing and swimming. Barbecue and picnic facilities are provided. Across the hills, from which the town gets its name, wildflowers are found in abundance during spring. The natural bush covering the hills is the largest single area of natural vegetation remaining in the northern wheatbelt region.
