The land surrounding Wickepin was opened up in 1893, with early settlers coming for the sandalwood, mallet bark and to graze sheep. By 1909 Wickepin had became a railhead complete with police station and from that time on the town prospered. Today the main industries in the area are grain growing and livestock production.
Wickepin has some interesting historical sites and buildings featuring excellent examples of Edwardian architecture. The old Roads Board Hall, hotels, shops and private residences can still be seen today. Albert Facey, the colourful author of 'A Fortunate Life', lived 16 kilometres south of Wickepin. His house has been restored and is open to visitors.
