The wheatbelt town of Trayning was proclaimed in 1912 and has developed as a service centre for the surrounding rural district. Vast wheat properties and sheep farming are the nucleus of the town's economy today.
Gold was also found in the region when prospectors stumbled across an unusual piece of white quartz at a place called White Man, northeast of Trayning on the Mougakine Road. It is still visible today and is accessible to the public for picnics.
Strange rock formations are one of the main attractions of the region. Ancient twin granite monoliths are located at Yarragin, and Billycatting Rock in the same area is also worth visiting. The granite outcrop is marked by a pile of rocks known as Trig Point which was constructed by early surveyors. The area is a 2,500hectare flora and fauna reserve containing some extremely rare plant species including sandalwood trees.
Aboriginal gnamma (waterholes) are dotted around the countryside providing pleasant picnic spots. One old stone well and gnamma is located on the Trayning to Bencubbin Road.
