Like so much of the Midlands region, the area around Nungarin was first discovered by John Septimus Roe during an expedition in 1836. Shepherds moved into the area soon after and traces of their occupation, including old stone walls and the socalled shepherds chimneys, are still found today.
Between 1944 and 1960 an Australian Army Personnel depot was operating in the town with 1,200 soldiers stationed there. The only remaining shed is now used as a council depot.
Of historical interest just outside town is McCorry's Hotel which has a blacksmiths shop attached. It was originally built in 1911 and was renovated in 1973 with a caravan facility attached.
The old Mangowine Homestead, 18 kilometres north of the town, has been preserved under the National Trust and restored to its former glory. Set on 10 hectares of natural bushland, the homestead was a wayside stop for prospectors heading to the Yilgarn Goldfields during the 1880s.
