Nestled in the heart of the Avon Valley about an hour's drive from Perth, Northam is the main centre for the surrounding agricultural districts.

The early settlers came to the area in 1830 and the town was gazetted in 1836. Following the discovery of gold farther east in the 1890s, Northam became an important stopover point for prospectors and later a railway town.

The Avon River flows through the town and is home to a variety of birdlife including the famous Northam white swans, which were brought to the town at the turn of the century. The best place to view the river and swans is from the suspension bridge.

The 100yearold Shamrock Hotel in the main street has been fully restored. It claims to be the first hotel in Australia to offer nine different beers on tap, including local brews. Morby Cottage, built in 1836 by a pioneering family, is open for inspection and close to Northam, the restored colonial mansion, 'Buckland', houses a magnificent collection of antiques and offers barbecue facilities within its landscaped gardens.

Northam's most famous event is the Avon Descent, a 133kilometre white water boat race, which every year attracts thousands of people, competitors and spectators, on the first weekend in August.
