The township of Leeman on the Batavia Coast north of Perth was named after Dutch navigator Abraham Leeman van Santwits of the ship Waeckende Boey. The ship was sent to the region to try to rescue the survivors from the wreck of the Vergulde Draeck which sank off the Western Australian coast in 1656. Leeman was marooned during the attempt and had to sail back to Indonesia in an open boat.

Attractive modern homes are a feature of the township, which in recent years has grown as a residential community for Western Titanium's mineral sands venture at Eneabba.

Fisherman's Islands, four kilometres southwest of Leeman, attract visitors to the area. The islands are excellent for fishing and diving and are home to a large seal population. They can only be reached by boat. Stockyard Gully National Park, east of Leeman, is accessible by four wheeldrive vehicle only. The area was created by an aboveandbelowground river system and is susceptible to flash flooding after rain.
