The pioneer township of Kununoppin is situated in the wheatlands region of Western Australia. Kununoppin is Trayning's sister town and is part of the Shire of Trayning which embraces the districts of Kununoppin and Yelbeni.
The town site was gazetted on January 27, 1911. Later that year the railway line from Korrelocking to Kununoppin was opened.
These days the main industries in the region are sheep and broad acre wheat farming.
A craft shop and planned museum are situated in Wilson Street. Devonshire teas are available.
There are several interesting rock formations in the area including Billycatting Rock. This is located in a 2,500 hectare flora and fauna reserve, nine kilometres north of Kununoppin. This massive granite outcrop is identified by Fig Point, a pile of rocks set up by the early surveyors. Picnic and barbecue facilities are under construction.
The Twin Granite Monoliths are ancient granite outcrops to be found at Yarragin, northeast of Kununoppin. The area's history of gold is displayed in an interesting fingerlike projection of white quartz, known as the "White Man". This unusual shape is located on the Moujakine Road, northeast of Trayning.
Also of interest to the visitor are the many old Aboriginal watering holes or "gnamma holes" scattered throughout the region.
