In the Central South region, 285 kilometres east of Perth, Kulin is used as a base for visiting local attractions.
One of the unusual landforms in the region is Buckley's Breakaway, where the lateritecapped rock face falls into the valley below exposing layers of clay beneath. The clay is called Kaolin and is formed by the decomposition of granite rock.
A short drive from Kulin along the 86 Gate Road is the Rabbit Proof fence built during the height of the rabbit plague between 1901 and 1907. Unfortunately, by the time the fence was completed, the rabbits were established on both sides. Around 9 kilometres west on the 86 Gate Road is the Rock Hole, a hole blasted out of the granite to provide water for the boundary riders who camped there in the early days.
Eighteen kilometres east of the town, near Buckley's Breakaway, is Jilakin Rock and Lake. Jilakin is a spectacular grey granite monolith with a picnic area is situated at the foot of the rock.
