Koorda lies northeast of the Avon Valley region and was first surveyed in 1836 by John Septimus Roe who led an expedition to find pastoral land.
These days it is the centre of a graingrowing region, receiving and handling huge quantities of grain at the CoOperative Bulk Handling complex.
The town is known for its corn dolly workshops. The art of making corn dollies was first brought to Koorda by English immigrant Frank Lodge in 1911.
The Koorda Museum, which was a hospital pre World War II, houses an interesting display of old hospital and surgical equipment in one of the old wards. Early farm machinery and household items recovered from old homesteads in the area are also exhibited.
There are a number of attractive granite outcrops with picnic facilities close to town. In September and October the surrounding countryside has spectacular displays of wildflowers.
