Situated in Western Australia's deep south, Jerramungup was first settled in 1848 by John Hassell. He used the land to run sheep. Over a century later, in 1953, Jerramungup became a War Service Land Settlement Area when 123 farms were cleared and settled. Sheep and wool production is still of major importance to the district's economy. Cattle and pigs are also farmed and grain crops have been established.
A fascinating Military Museum, on display in the tourist information centre, boasts a 30yearold collection of military artefacts, including uniforms, guns, medals and vehicles. The guns and vehicles are all in working order.
The Fitzgerald River National Park, on the Jacup South Road, is famous for its magnificent variety of native plants. Bushwalking is a major attraction in the park, along with beach and rock fishing. Due to the rapidly changing conditions, boating in the area is considered dangerous.
