Greenbushes is situated amidst a farming district, on the edge of the big timber country in the South West. The town was settled in the 1860s after tin was discovered in the area. However, mining is not the community's only industry; timber, farming and tourism also contribute to the economy.

Visitors can retrace the area's early history with a trip along the Geegeelup Heritage Trail. This is a 52 kilometre circuit featuring Bridgetown and Greenbushes and highlighting historic sites.

Greenbushes Historical Park displays some interesting aspects of the tin mining industry. There is a mock mine shaft complete with head frame, machinery and a replica of a prospector's hut. Two local industries, Whittaker's Timber Mill and Greenbushes Tin Mine, can be inspected by arrangement.
