The township of Gnowangerup was established in 1904. Pioneer farmers, recognising the potential of the grazing land had already settled in the district. However, it was not until the construction of the railway that a steady stream of people began to arrive in the area. The first Merino sheep were introduced in Gnowangerup four years after the town's establishment and merino sheep studs are now a major feature of the district.

The Stirling Range National Park is located only a short distance from Gnowangerup. Native bush covers an area of 115,671 hectares and peaks rise to over 1000 metres above the surrounding plains. In spring the park is carpeted in brilliantly coloured wildflowers. In winter it is often covered instead with a light fall of snow.
