In the extreme southwest of the Central South region of Western Australia Darkan town site was declared in 1905 and a year later the first building, an hotel, was constructed. The hotel has been modified several times over the years but it still stands just north of the railway station. After the railway reached the town in 1907, Darkan began to flourish, and by 1908 the town boasted a store, bakehouse, boarding house, cafe, trading company, bootmaker and blacksmith. Today farming is the main industry in the region.
Displays of many local arts and crafts can be seen at the Darkan Arts Council, and on Quindanning Road is the historic Slab Cottage built in the early 1900s.
Walking the 2.2 kilometre Darkan Heritage Trail is a pleasant way to spend time taking in the area's natural beauty. The trail goes through the township and some of the surrounding bushland. Between August and November visitors can see superb displays of native flowers in the surrounding countryside.
