Tatura promotes itself as 'Water Wheel Country' and is the home of the Irrigation Research Institute, now the major centre in Victoria for research into irrigated crops. The 'V' shaped Tatura Trellis, a major advance in peach production was devised here.
Adjoining the Tatura Public Cemetery, 3km west of the town, is Tatura German Military Cemetery, the resting place of 250 German internees from World Wars I and II. They were exhumed from other cemeteries in Australia and buried here in 1958. There are 239 civilian graves marked with a Latin cross and the remaining prisonerofwar plaques are identified by the Iron Cross. The cemetery was financed by the Federal Republic of Germany and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
