Morwell, eastern Victoria's largest city, is situated in the heart of the Latrobe Valley. The city has significant industry such as the Australian Paper Manufacturers' mill which is the largest paper mill in the Southern hemisphere, and a long association with electricity generation. Morwell opencut mine and power station are open to visitors at the State Electricity Commission Visitor Centre. Tours inspect the 3squarekilometre surface area to see dredges working the coal faces and the conveying of coal to the turbo generator power station.
Morwell has a number of tourist attractions which include the Latrobe Valley Arts Centre and the warm waters of Hazelwood Pondage where watersports are possible all year round. In addition, Morwell National Park, 16km to the south, offers walking trails through a high ridge stringybark forest and through moist areas studded with tree ferns and cool gullies with clear mountain streams.
