ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE
• There are three levels of administration in Australia. The highest level is the Federal Parliament which is elected every three years,. The second level, parliaments of the six states and two territories, are elected every four years, while the third tier of government comprises local councils (municipal and rural councils), usually having 5-15 members. Voting for all Australian citizens over 18 years of age is compulsory.
• Local councils often provide the following services:
- Child health clinics, kindergartens and play centres;
- Meals-on-wheels for older citizens;
- Housing and entertainment for pensioners;
- Leisure and amusement centres for young people;
- Libraries;
- Sports facilities.
LEISURE AND CULTURAL CENTRES
Most local councils have libraries where books can be borrowed free
of charge. Some have art galleries and theatres. They also
provide municipal premises for use by social organisations. The councils
are responsible for parks, public gardens and some sports facilities in
their area. They often have swimming pools, tennis courts and golf
courses.
PUBLIC HEALTH CARE
The local councils are responsible for cleanliness and public order
in their areas:
- eradication of vermin and dangerous animals;
- maintenance of health standards in public premises, restaurants
and shops;
- provision of public toilets;
- registration of dogs and rounding-up of stray animals;
- immunisation of children against various diseases.
PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT
The following come under the control of the local councils:
- building, extensions and improvements to buildings;
- pruning of public trees;
- garbage collection, recycling of waste products and street cleaning;
- local traffic;
- parks, beaches and gardens.
You can visit these local councils for information about the services
they provide. Councils and libraries can provide information on the
range of other services available. Telephone numbers and addresses
are listed in alphabetical order in telephone directories. For example,
to find information on Lane Cove Council look under "L" for Lane Cove,
or "B" for Bankstown City Council.
