Many foreignstudents study
in Australia. This is partly due to the reasonably-priced
quality education provided by Australian tertiary institutions,
but also because of the increasing restrictions placed on immigration
by Australianvisa requirements. Student visas are not
difficult to obtain and provide not only entry to the country but also
the real prospect of ultimately achieving permanent residency status
in Australia. After graduating from a tertiary institution
it is possible to apply for and obtain High Skills Visa No. 136.
In this case it is not necessary to sit an English-languageexamination
or provide evidence of work experience in the field of specialisation.
Moreover, additional points are obtained for having acquired education
in Australia.
In order to obtain a studentvisa,
it is necessary to demonstrate financial ability to pay for the costs of
education and to be able to support oneself while in Australia.
There is no stipulated monetary amount, but each case is assessed
individually. There is an age limit (35 years) but this can be waived
in particular circumstances.
The cost of education varies, but is generally in the range of $4-18 thousand US dollars. A specific minimum knowledge of English language approved by IELTS or TOEFL is required to enrol in professional courses or universities. If the level of English-language proficiency is insufficient, students can be offered preliminary language courses to achieve this level. These courses cost between 170 and 250 US dollars per week. A student is required to study from 20 to 40 weeks, depending on the level of language required and individual ability.
Apart from universities, overseas children can study at state schools or privateprimaryschools and colleges. Moreover, from year 6 some private schools offer full board at the school. The cost of full board and education is usually US$10,000-15,000 per year.
Foreign students can also undertake secondary technical and businesscourses, where the duration of courses, depending on the particular specialisation, is from 10 to 60 weeks.
English Language Colleges are especially popular. Tuition in these colleges is organised on a modular basis according to the ELICOS system and covers all levels - from beginner's level to academic level.
In order to obtain a studentvisa, applicants must provide documents to show that they will be attending a registered educational establishment, that they have medical insurance and sufficient funds to keep themselves during their period of education in Australia.
